Gram Carol's Pie Dough

Gram Carol’s Pie Dough

makes 5 crust


4 cups all purpose flour

1 3/4 cup cold shortening

2 Tablespoon sugar

2 1/4 teaspoons salt

1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 egg

1/2 cup very cold water



Whisk together the cold water, egg and vinegar in a measuring cup.

Place the flour, sugar, salt in a mixing bowl (or in the bowl of a food processor).

Add the shortening to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or forks (or food processor) mix (pulse) until peas size balls form.


Add the liquid mixture and mix (pulse) until dough comes together.


Hand form into 5 (7.8 oz.) equal size balls.


Wrap each ball with plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes.


Roll each ball between two sheets of plastic wrap to desired size.
